Invormation provided by Kathy Holcomb July 2009-

I have always shared my Grandpa Harold's love of horses and other animals. I graduated in 1978 from California Polytechnic State University, B.S. in Animal Science. Worked as a Staff Research Associate for University of California, San Diego, for 12 years, mostly under Allen Merritt, MD. The work led to lifesaving surfactant treatment for the underdeveloped lungs of premature babies.

Then I stayed home for a number of years with my daughters Megan and Keri. Wrote columns and feature articles for several horse magazines. Co-founder of Jamul Trails Council, president for four years. Competed with my horse “Cricket” in dressage shows, reaching upper levels and winning amateur championships in San Diego chapter of California Dressage Society (CDS). Served on board of directors of CDS-SD as newsletter editor. Megan and Keri were in the US Pony Club so for a few years I was an official Pony Club Mom. I made art quilts that were exhibited in one-woman show at San Diego Women's History Museum in Oct 1997.

In 1999, obtained a masters degree in Liberal Arts from San Diego State University. Went back to work for UCSD as an editor, then administrative specialist. When Megan and Keri left home, I realized I could return to my dream of being involved in equine research. In 2007 I entered the University of California, Davis, Animal Biology Graduate Group to pursue a PhD in equine behavior.
